Overview

1 What Are Shipboard Control Cables

Also called marine control cable, designed for fixed installation in control, instrumentation, alarm & monitoring circuits on ships and offshore units.

Rated voltage: 150/250V (300V) per IEC 60092-376.

Focus on signal integrity, EMC immunity, flame safety and marine durability.

4 Analysis of Technical Specification

4.1 Rated Voltage

Shipboard control cables are rated at 150/250V (300V) per IEC 60092-376. This lower voltage rating reflects their intended role in control circuits pilot lamp circuits, alarm circuits, monitoring systems, and general control loops not main power distribution. For power transmission applications (0.6/1kV and above), please refer to our shipboard power cable product page.

4.2 Insulation Material

PVC: Suitable for general-purpose control circuits where LSZH is not mandatory. Not recommended for enclosed space due to smoke emission in fire.

EPR (Ethylene Propylene Rubber): With excellent flexibility and superior bending resistance, it is particularly suitable for deck machinery and control circuits with frequent vibrations. Its good electrical stability ensures reliable signal transmission.

XLPE (Cross-linked Polyethylene): Delivers high continuous operating temperature (90), with stable electrical performance, high insulation resistance, and low dielectric loss, it is suitable for control circuits that require signal integrity. Additionally, it offers cost-effective advantages.

4.3 Screening (When Required)

For applications with electromagnetic interference concerns (e.g. installations near propulsion motors, generators, or radio transmitters), a collective braided screen  (tinned copper wire) is applied over all cores assembly. Collective braided screen provides effective electrostatic shielding against external interference.

4.4 Flame Retardant & Fire Resistant

Flame Retardant Shipboard Control Cable: Complies with IEC 60332-3-22 Category A, preventing the spread of fire along bundled cable runs essential for maintaining system segregation in fire scenarios.

Fire Resistant Shipboard Control Cable: Compliant with IEC 60331, essential for emergency control circuits (emergency generator control, fire pump control, escape lighting control). The conductor is wrapped with fire-resistant mica tape, enabling the cable to maintain circuit integrity when exposed to 950flame for up to 180 minutes.

4.5 Low-smoke Zero-halogen(LSZH)

LSZH shipboard control cables are mandatory for passenger ships, cruise vesselsand enclosed cabins. In a fire, these cables emit minimal smoke (60% light transmittance per IEC 61034) and no halogenated toxic gases (pH 4.3, conductivity 10 μS/mm per IEC 60754-2) protecting personnel during evacuation and preventing corrosion of sensitive electronic equipment in control rooms.

4.6 Flexible conductor

Class 5 or Class 6 copper conductor: Provides superior flexibility with smaller bending radius than Class 2 conductor. Recommended for control cable runs with multiple bends, confined switchboard termination.

4.7 Armor type

Galvanized steel wire braided (Code 9): Provides high mechanical protection against tension and compression. Essential for vertical risers (multi-deck runs), exposed deck installations prone to impact damage.

Tinned copper wire braided (Code 8): Combines electromagnetic screening effectiveness with mechanical protection. Ideal for control circuits near high-power equipment where both physical protection and interference rejection are required. Also provides excellent corrosion resistance in marine environments.
