Marine Fire‑Resistant Cables SOLAS Fire‑Survival Shipboard Cables

Shipboard Fire‑Resistant Cables are specially designed for critical emergency circuits on vessels and offshore installations, complying with SOLAS requirements and tested in accordance with IEC 60331 fire‑survival standards. These cables maintain circuit integrity under fire conditions, ensuring continuous power and signal supply for essential safety equipment including fire pumps, emergency lighting, alarm and communication systems during shipboard fire hazards.

Constructed with special fire‑resistant insulating layers, many options adopt LSZH compound to limit toxic smoke and corrosive gas release in high‑temperature scenarios. Our scope covers multiple constructions, suitable for power, control and instrument circuits onboard various commercial ships, passenger vessels and offshore platforms.

Overview

Relevant International Standards

Our shipboard fire‑resistant cables follow the regulatory framework of the SOLAS Convention, which mandates circuit integrity for safety‑related circuits aboard commercial vessels. Fire survival performance is verified per IEC 60331, the global test standard for cable circuit integrity under fire exposure, covering test temperatures up to 830‑950 °C with mechanical shock for minimum 90‑minute fire resistance duration.

Base construction complies with IEC 60092‑350 general marine cable requirements. Additional fire‑safety related tests include IEC 60332‑3 for bunched flame retardancy, IEC 61034 for smoke density and IEC 60754 for halogen gas emission for LSZH variants. All products can be supplied with classification society type approvals such as DNV, BV, ABS and CCS for ship survey and PSC inspection acceptance.

Fire‑Resistant VS Flame‑Retardant Cables

It is critical to distinguish fire‑resistant cables from ordinary flame‑retardant marine cables.

Flame‑Retardant (IEC 60332‑3): Prevents flame propagation along cable bundles; the cable will stop burning once the external fire source is removed. However, the circuit will fail under sustained direct fire exposure.

Fire‑Resistant(IEC 60331): Maintains electrical continuity and circuit integrity while being exposed to fire. It keeps safety equipment running during fire events, which is mandatory for SOLAS‑required emergency circuits.

Note: Ordinary flame-retardant cables cannot replace fire-resistant cables for critical emergency circuits.

Key Features

1. Maintain stable circuit integrity for minimum 90 minutes under fire plus mechanical shock per IEC 60331‑1 / IEC 60331‑2;

2. Tinned copper conductor resists salt‑mist and marine corrosion;

3. Mica‑tape fire‑barrier layer for core fire‑survival performance;

4. Optional LSZH sheath: low‑smoke, zero‑halogen, low toxic and corrosive gas emission during fire;

5. Available in unarmoured or braided armoured versions for different onboard installation conditions;

6. Suitable for fixed installation inside machinery spaces, accommodation areas and safety‑critical compartment. Type‑approval available to meet new‑build and vessel retrofit survey requirements.

Typical Onboard Applications

These fire‑survival cables are applied for SOLAS‑mandated emergency circuits on cargo ships, passenger vessels, ferries and offshore platforms;

Emergency lighting and escape‑route illumination;

Fire detection, alarm and public address systems;

Emergency shutdown (ESD) safety loops;

Critical emergency communication and signal circuits;

For non-emergency general power, control and instrumentation circuits, please check our Shipboard Power Cables, Shipboard Control Cables and Shipboard Instrumentation & Communication Cables product pages.
